Iconic Film Fashion Ready-To-Wear
Inspired by the delightful HELLOGIGGLES website post "10 Best Disney Movie Outfits", I thought it would be fun to revisit some of my favorite iconic movie-fashion moments, and inspiration for how to make these looks work today.
MARIE ANTOINETTE
Kirsten Dunst in The Carnation Pink Dress - designer Milena Canonero
Okay, this entire movie was just pure visual indulgence for every girl... everything sparkly, pastel and sweet as candy-- speaking of candy, didn't everyone want to be Rose Byrne in the "shopping-and-eating-every-confection-possible" scene? I did. But, I digress. Everything in this film was delicious, but I truly took a breath when Kirsten wore this gorgeous Carnation Pink Gown against her porcelain skin, blue eyes and rosy lips/cheeks. Not everyone can pull off this color, you guys. Seriously. Amazing.
THE NOTEBOOK
Rachel McAdams The Red Hat & Suit - designer Karyn Wagner
Allie goes to tell Lon she's leaving town and we all know where she's really going. Who didn't go gaga over this Katherine Hepburn look? The red tweed with leather details? So classy and vibrant! I immediately wished I were wearing red lipstick in the theatre when this popped onscreen.
THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS
Gwyneth Paltrow in The Fur Coat & Black eyes - designer Karen Patch
All I know is that after I saw this movie, I walked around in raccoon eyeliner and tennis shirts for a month... and I may or may not have busted out my Grandma's vintage furs.
RED RIDING HOOD
Amanda Seyfried in The Red Cape - designer
Say what you will about this bizarre twilight-esque film, the Red Riding Hood costume was BEAUTIFUL. I instantly wished to have porcelain skin for a day, just to try out this look.
ELIZABETH: THE GOLDEN AGE
Cate Blanchett in Battle Armor - designer Alexandra Byrne
It's no wonder this in incredible suit of armor was chosen for the movie poster image. I have seen a few Joan of Arc's in battle armor but nothing comes close to the breathtaking beauty and strength of Cate, in all her flaming-red glory, astride a white horse in a rose-gold metal suit.
TITANIC
Kate Winslet in The Boarding Dress- designer Deborah L. Scott
Everyone always makes a big fuss over the purple/red dress from Titanic, but I was captivated by this look. The pinstriped suit-dress and black tie were bold and fashion-forward, but paired with that HAT and those GLOVES!! I died. Just look at the deep purple lining on the expertly cut white leather glove! And the way that hat frames her face. This costume was the perfect way to tell the audience Rose was living in the lap of luxury. Yummy.
