Guys Who Lean on Stuff

I just like how he's always leaning. Against stuff. He leans great."
Angela Chase on Jordan Catalano (My So-Called Life)

What is it about guys who lean on stuff, and why do women love it so much?? Brando was the first real "Leaner" I remember noticing, although I guess James Dean did it too, and they were (obviously) quite popular with the ladies. Was Elvis a Leaner? I can't recall... I knew a few Leaners in high school and they always got girls. I don't know so many now that I'm a grown up, though. Wait-- that's not true, I've met a few in Hollywood but now that I think of it they're all under 30. Whatever THAT means...

Anyhow, I asked my husband Michael why certain guys lean on things. "You know the kind of guys I'm talking about, right?" I asked.

"D@&chebags?" was his reply.

After I finished laughing we had a hearty conversation about Leaners. His theory was that Leaning portrays an air of confidence and girls want to feel safe, so they are drawn to guys who seem confident. Makes sense... "But do these guys do this on purpose?" I asked, "Do they specifically walk around looking for things to lean on?" As Michael is not a Leaner he wasn't sure (although he does lean on the wall when he's brushing his teeth at night and I have to admit, it's super sexy).

Doesn't it seem like a lot of work to always find something to put your weight on? I tried leaning on stuff all day today and it was incredibly uncomfortable, not to mention a total waste of time... Maybe that's it... Maybe it's the "I don't care" attitude or the "I'm-too-cool-to-stand-up-straight-and-be-involved-in-anything" vibe Leaners are going for. But the question still remains: Why is this considered so attractive?
Is it our innate feminine desire to be validated as "worthy" of the attention of the guy who doesn't care about anything? A desire to be Annette Bening to the Leaning Warren Beatty's of our world? And why is that so important? Is it a lack of fathering? Why don't we believe that we're beautiful enough and valuable enough to the point where we are so easily captivated by a guy who is literally posing all the time? I mean, what is UP with that!?

I'm gonna do some more research and get back to you. Maybe I'll get lucky and find a real-life Leaner and ask him why he does it. In the meantime, discuss amongst yourselves.

*** I ought to mention that not every male who happens to lean on something every once in a while is a "Leaner". We all get tired of standing straight. This is a very particular breed I'm talking about here. Why do I feel like they're mostly in high school? Is it an insecurity thing? I digress...
