I became friends with Nick about 4 years ago when I brought the libretto of my stage adaptation of "The Notebook" to him in hopes that he'd give me permission to do a small workshop in Wilmington and see what we had. Though our initial relationship was business, Nick and his family were so inviting and lovely that I found myself much more interested in friendship with the Sparks than I was in any business venture. His wife, Cathy, is hilarious and a firecracker, his kids are fun, kind and well-adjusted (to the life of fame that was thrust upon them some 10 years ago), and Nicholas is warm, funny and smart. Like, crazy smart. Last time we visited I had about an hour long conversation with him about economics. I swore to myself I'd bring Michael over and make Nick teach us a class on mutual funds, investment and off-shore bank accounts. I haven't done it yet, but I will (Nick, you've been warned! :)
For those of you who've been hiding under a rock for the last 10 years, Nicholas Sparks is the author of 17 novels (including a cornerstone of modern-american literature, "The Notebook")and 1 autobiography (one of my favorite books, "Three Weeks With My Brother"). He's cornered the market on the quiet, emotional tales that usually require very little external conflict and instead, focus on the longings and challenges of more sensitive matters-- the matters of the heart. He has, somehow, managed to turn out roughly one book per year and 2011 is no exception. Hot off the heels of last year's "Safe Haven", "The Best of Me" debuts this Tuesday, October 11th. He's also adding television to his resume, as he just sold a supernatural-themed pilot to ABC called "The Watchers".
