I'll tell you, I have tried and tried to be one of those "designer clothes" girls. I mean, what girl doesn't want to shop on Rodeo and wear Chloe or Stella McCartney? I have some girlfriends who are naturally very tidy, tailored women. Their hair is always perfect, their skin is always glowing and they wear the hell out of their Louboutins. Clean and elegant style comes easily to these girls and if they aren't in every fashion magazine, they should be.

So, for years I tried to fit into this seemingly exclusive club of tidy fashionistas. My first problem is-- I'm obsessed with vintage. Always have been. When I was very young and visiting my Grandma Doris in New Jersey, I took great delight in spending hours in her attic.

My grandparents were theatrefolk, like me, and her attic was not only full of old props and playbills, but it was flooded with furs and jewelry, shoes, dresses and everything else you can imagine.
I was swept away and to this day i am greatly comforted by the smell of an old wardrobe or trunk. I have some vintage furs and, though it's not p.c., I love them and I wear them every chance I get because it reminds me of when i was a curious little girl playing dress up.

My second problem is that i am not naturally inclined to be a tidy person in my apparel. I feel constricted in clothes that are too tailored, I feel fake in a couture ensemble, and I feel restrained in my self expression knowing that I'm wearing something that at least another thousand girls have. I like a messier style. I like big jewelry and hats and oversized sweaters with tights and old boots. I love summer dresses from the 70s, or homemade from old slips. My favorite dress was a $12 find at a vintage shop in NY. It was pastel, rainbow striped and it was my lucky dress... I seriously had amazing luck every time I wore it (it also became a frequented item in my "audition" wardrobe when I was still looking for jobs. I love wearing things that have not been recently mass produced in China and I love knowing that there is a history behind my purchase.

So for all you Vintage girls out there who keep trying to fit into the couture mould... Here's my shoutout to you! Love your inner Antiquarian!! And heres a few great places online to find more vintage goodies...
